If you suffer from severe varicose veins, VNUS Closure may be the right procedure to give you relief.
There are several procedures available to treat varicose veins, also sometimes referred to as venous disease, venous insufficiency, or venous reflux disease. To read about the other vein treatments available at Cosmetic Centers of Hawaii, visit the Procedures for the Veins page.
Varicose veins are abnormal veins that have been damaged in some way, causing the valves to malfunction and the blood to flow backward toward the ankles rather than toward the heart. As a result, the veins become swollen and twisted, causing pain, skin problems, cramps, aches, itching, and burning. For more information, visit the Understanding Venous Disease page.
In the past, the treatment for varicose veins involved a very painful surgery to strip the veins from the legs. VNUS Closure is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, and patients report that they experience little pain during or after the surgery.
In VNUS Closure, a tiny incision is made so that a very small catheter can be inserted into each problem vein, and the vein is then heated using radiofrequency. This process causes the vein to collapse and close so that the blood can no longer flood backward toward the ankles and cause problems and pain. The blood is then routed through healthier veins.
VNUS Closure is an outpatient surgery. All that is necessary is a compression bandage on the treated leg for 48 hours. Local anesthesia is usually used as well as a gentle anesthetic administered through an IV. You are awake, talking, and comfortable throughout the procedure. Someone needs to be available to drive you home after the procedure, although you will be capable of walking immediately after surgery.
Most patients can go back to work and other normal activities the day after the surgery.
Patients report that they have little to no swelling, bruises, or scars after VNUS Closure. It may take a couple of weeks before full relief from the symptoms of varicose veins is felt.
Note that varicose veins cannot be used for heart bypass, so closing these veins will not affect any heart surgery that may be necessary in the future.
VNUS Closure is an excellent minimally invasive procedure to alleviate unattractive, painful varicose veins.
