Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion was developed in Italy in the 1980s and has been used throughout Europe since its development. It gained FDA approval for use in the United States in 1997. The procedure is used for superficial skin resurfacing and treating a range of skin abnormalities by progressively abrading the surface of the skin. This treatment works best when used with a comprehensive skincare program customized to treat your specific condition.

How Microdermabrasion Works

During a microdermabrasion procedure, the skin is exfoliated mechanically with a method similar to that experienced when using a pumice stone or loofah sponge. Using a hand piece, a fine jet of aluminum dioxide micro crystals--which look like granules of sugar--are vacuumed over the skin's surface at high speed. The used crystals, dead skin cells and any debris on the skin's surface are collected in a waste disposal bottle. Any of the machine's parts, including the plastic or glass tips, that come into contact with a patient's skin during treatment are discarded. The procedure generaly takes 10 to 30 minutes, and its virtually painless. The length of treatment depends on the size of the area being treated since it can be done on any part of the body.

Microdermabrasion can erase some of the visible signs of aging; fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, blemishes and uneven pigmentation can be minimized after several treatments; and acne scars can appear less obvious. Rough, dry and oily skin can also be treated with microderabarasion.

Correcting problems in less-than-perfect skin can take a while. Because microdermabrasion exfoliates a thin layer of skin, it usually takes about six treatments to achieve noticeable results. Depending on the condition of the skin, results can take anywhere from two to eighteen treatments to achieve. To allow the treated skin time to heal, treatments can be spaced from one week to one month apart.
