Acne

Acne is a red, irritating skin rash primarily affecting teenagers and young adults.

Acne can occur at any age but commonly affects teenagers and young adults. Typical acne appears in the oil-producing areas of the body such as the face, chest, and back. Acne can also occur on the neck and upper arms.

Severe acne can have a short-term or potentially lasting psychological effect. Decreased self-esteem and self-confidence can lead to social withdrawal and even depression. Left untreated, severe acne can lead to disfiguring scarring, which can itself be difficult to treat.

Acne treatments work by reducing oil production, speeding up skin cell turnover, fighting bacterial infection, reducing the inflammation or doing all four. With most prescription acne treatments, you may not see results for four to eight weeks.

Dr. Stover may recommend a prescription medication that you apply to your skin (topical medication) or take by mouth (oral medication) or a skin care line that may help with your treatment.

Chemical peels and microdermabrasion may be helpful in controlling acne. These cosmetic procedures — which have traditionally been used to lessen the appearance of fine lines, sun damage and minor facial scars — are most effective when used in combination with other acne treatments.

Dr. Stover may be able to use certain procedures to diminish scars left by acne. These include fillers, micro-dermabrasion, intense light therapy and laser resurfacing.
