Apicoectomy (Tooth Root Surgery)

Dr. Stover has extensive training and experience is a procedure called apicoectomy. A badly decayed tooth that has been treated with a root canal filling procedure and a cap or crown may have persisting or evolving infection or cyst around the root tip or apex. To eliminate the infection or cyst an apicoectomy is performed.

Dr. Stover makes an incision in the gums and exposes the root tip by removing surrounding bone. The root tip is shaved and the infection or cyst is removed. The amputated root stump is then instrumented and filled with a special filling material. The bone defect is then typically filled with bone grafting material. Patients typically prefer to be sedated for this procedure which can often be uncomfortable.
