BOTOX Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an effective and safe treatment for moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines) between the eyebrows. Dr. Stover also treats crow's feet and the small lines around the mouth, as well as the two vertical muscle bands on the front of the neck (platysma).
BOTOX is FDA-approved for patients between the ages of 18 and 65. It works by temporarily immobilizing the muscles that cause wrinkles and sagging to form. BOTOX is administered by trained healthcare professionals in a non-surgical setting, and requires no anesthetic or recovery time. This is a highly effective and inexpensive procedure, which has made BOTOX one of the most popular aesthetic procedures performed in medical spas across the United States. Because it works by immobilizing facial muscles, BOTOX Cosmetic can only be used to treat expression lines. For moderate to severe wrinkles caused by aging and sagging skin, other options, like dermal fillers or a mini-facelift, might be prescribed.
The BOTOX Cosmetic Procedure
Treatment with BOTOX® is virtually painless. A small sting will be felt at the injection site. Following the treatment patients may experience slight bruising that quickly fades. Normal activities can be resumed immediately. Afterwards, patients will see noticeable results that include a smoothing and softening of the skin and a more relaxed appearance. Possible side effects include temporary weakness of nearby muscles. The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are completely reversible, so any side effects will be temporary.
In patient-satisfaction surveys, 97% of people treated with BOTOX said they were happy with their experience.1,2 Because the effects of the procedure will wear off in about four to six months, the procedure will likely need to be repeated to maintain desired effects. However, some doctors have seen that long-term use of BOTOX can lead to reduced muscle function over time (due to atrophy), and that will give patients a longer duration effects with each following treatment.
