Treatment of Scars
Scars are changes in the skin as a result of injury. Most scars are flat and involve various texture and pigment changes. A hypertrophic scar remains confined to the site of orginal trauma and may feel firmer to the touch. A keloid scar, on the other hand, extends beyond the original site of injury and may continue to "grow" with time.
Treatment options:
Pink/red scars: If a scar is pink, IPL (intense pulsed light) can be used to help reduce the pink/red color. A topical anesthetic is applied 30 minutes prior to each treatment. It may take 3-5 IPL treatments to get rid of the pink/red color.
Hypertrophic scars and Keloid scars: Hypertrophic and keloid scars can be reduced in size with intralesional injections of triamcinolone. Fraxel and ActivFX lasers are often used to shrink, blend and smooth scars. Several treatments are usually needed for the best results. Sometimes, the keloid lesion can be excised however, there is always a chance that a new keloid can form.
