Remove puffiness, bags and drooping around the eyes that may cause you to look worn and tired.
The skin of the upper and lower eyelids is a sensitive area and deteriorates with age. Sun damage, air pollution, smoking or disease may hasten the breakdown of elastic fibers which keep the skin firm and taught under the orbital socket. Loss of muscle tone can cause droopiness and puffiness around the eyes. Eyelid surgery can correct these symptoms and restore a youthful, energized look to the eye area. It can also be used to improve the overall aesthetic appearance of the eyes.
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic treatment that improves the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelid area. For lower eyelids, the procedure can remove the appearance of puffiness under the eyes. Eyelid surgery can also be used to add a fold or crease to the upper eyelid, also called a double eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery may be performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a brow lift or Restylane® injections to eliminate fine lines under the eye or crow's feet at the corner of the eyes. However, lower eyelid surgery may not completely remove dark circles, festoons or cheek mounds. Discuss your desired results with your Dr Stover during the consultation to ensure you understand the results expected from your procedure.
During your consultation, Dr. Stover will review your complete medical history, including any conditions that may affect your vision. Disclose whether you have any eye disease such as dry eyes, glaucoma, detached retina or other conditions including circulatory disorders.
During the surgery, small incisions will be made along the natural folds of the upper eyelid. Excess fat, muscle and skin will then be removed to achieve an aesthetically pleasing effect. For the lower eyelid, an incision will be made in an inconspicuous spot, such as along the eyelash line. Eyelid puffiness caused by excess fat can be removed through an incision that will be invisible and leave no visible scar. In most cases, blepharoplasty will take from one to two hours and may be performed under sedative anesthesia, depending on whether other procedures will be performed.
Full recovery generally takes between one to two weeks, with the first few days requiring the use of a cold compress and eye ointment to keep the area moist. Some amount of swelling and bruising will be normal. It will not be necessary to cover the eyes with bandages. The eyes may feel dry and itchy for about 10 days following the procedure. The full benefits of the procedure will become apparent after about three weeks.
