A successful ear contour surgery can be a significant boost to a patient's social life and self-esteem.
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a specialized cosmetic procedure that corrects malformed or protruding ears. Because the ear is fully grown by the age of four, a majority of otoplasty patients tend to be between the ages of 4 and 14, although many adults also enjoy the benefits of ear surgery. Ear contouring helps balance the look and shape of the face and provides immediate and highly satisfying results.
For school-age children who are at excessive risk for teasing or bullying due to protruding ears, ear contour surgery can relieve stress and increase self-esteem. Children who are subjected to emotional and sometimes physical abuse often experience long term psychological effects. These concerns lead parents to initiate surgical correction for protuberant ears. However, it is important that a child be allowed to express his or her desire for surgery because only the child is able to judge the impact the condition causes. Delaying the procedure until adolescence may be beneficial as adolescents are better able to express their desire for correction.
Ear contour surgery is a relatively simple surgical procedure with minimum complications and risks. During the patient consultation, Dr. Stover will carefully examine each ear, taking careful and precise measurements. He will then talk with the patient to fully understand their concerns and desires. Ear contour surgery is safely and conveniently performed at any of Dr. Stover's three outpatient facilities on the Big Island of Hawaii. Most procedures take less than two hours and are performed under sedation.
During the procedure, Dr. Stover will use a small incision behind each ear to isolate and make adjustments to the underlying cartilage. He will then carefully sculpt the shape of the cartilage, restoring the ear to a more natural and harmonious shape. Surgical stitches and bandages will be used to help keep the ear in place as it heals to its new shape.
