Male Breast Reduction
Also known as gynecomastia reduction, breast reduction for men is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men.
What is Male Breast Reduction?
Gynecomastia, a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men, is common in men of any age. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by:
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue
- Gynecomastia may be present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
In the past, gynecomastia surgery was mostly done on teenage boys sent to surgeons by their pediatrician.
How is male breast reduction surgery performed?
The procedure is performed under anesthesia in the Waimea location of Dr. John Stover's Cosmetic Centers of Hawaii. It can be performed using liposuction techniques alone or in combination with a technique involving an incision around the areola through which excessive male breast tissue is removed. Sutures are placed and a compression garment is worn for 1-2 weeks after surgery.
